Middle School Updates with Mr. Radich

While 6th Grade was off at Outdoor School this week, the 7th and 8th Graders had a slightly modified schedule with several field trips and service-learning opportunities.

Here's an overview of what we did and a few photos:

Monday, October 6 - 8th Graders were lucky enough to get a behind the scenes tour of Michael Curry studios in Scappoose. This production studio is famous for puppets and supplies many costumes for Broadway shows, Disney theme parks and cruises, Las Vegas performances, and other shows all around the world. It was really cool to see how many different skills and types of people are needed to make a concept come to fruition!

Tuesday, October 7 -  7th and 8th Graders headed to Topaz Farm to give back some service to a farm that gives so much to the school. Students helped separate seeds from the "deadheads" of marigolds (we ended up filling six 5-gallon buckets with seeds and have been invited back next year to plant a field of marigolds that they hope to use as a lower-height addition to their corn maze! We also separated some garlic for the market and were allowed to run around in the current corn maze, big thank you to Kat and Jim and everyone over at Topaz Farm!

Wednesday, October 8 - Oregon Trail Lanes hosted 7th and 8th Graders for a couple rounds of bowling. Mr. Hess has been teaching bowling in PE, so this was a nice treat to complement this PE unit.

Thursday, October 9  -- We headed to the Oregon Food Bank to help package food for distribution. This service-learning trip was not only fun, but impactful as the food we packaged will help serve 14, 049 meals for families experiencing food insecurity.

7th and 8th Graders wrote reflections about their experiences, these will be on display, with photos, during Open House in Ms. Ferris and I's room.

4th Grade Updates with Mrs. Roberts

It has been a fun and busy fall in 4th grade! On September 30th, we walked to Topaz Farms to pick flowers. Before the trip, students planned which flowers they would choose to add up to exactly two dollars, a great real-life math challenge. We also visited Hoyt Arboretum, where we explored the vast variety of trees in the park. This experience helped launch our first National Park storyline, which will lead into an animal adaptation project later this fall.

1st Grade Updates with Ms. Clapp

First Grade has been learning lots about Phonics as well studying literary elements in ELA, like character and setting. In Math, we are learning fun skills, like how to measure with unconventional objects, such as popsicle sticks and unifix cubes. Also, students are becoming more proficient at adding and subtracting within 10 using different tools, like a number rack, 10 frame cards, and more. Last, we have gone on some fun nature walks as well as started Farm Storyline, where First Grade is building a farm with a loan from the "USDA." Our farm is named The Very Berry First Grade Farm!

Volunteer Corner

For all current volunteer opportunities, please check out the "Volunteer" tab on the SIS app. Here you will be able to find all the current volunteer needs in one place.  If you have any questions, concerns or ideas regarding volunteering at SIS, please reach out to Kelli and Mashell at volunteers@sauvieislandschool.org

Hello volunteer community,

On the horizon volunteer support needs are:

- Book Fair November 3-6 volunteer sign up email coming. There are many shifts to accommodate volunteers. Some of the most crucial times are the set up and take down. If you can lend a hand there it lessens the work load!

- Annual SIS Harvest Fest on November 6th email coming. There are many stations to volunteer for with different needs and shift times. The students have a great time but so do the volunteers!

Best,

Kelli Magnia and Mashell Pastorino

SIS Volunteer Coordinators

A reminder that all volunteers need to have an up to date background check on file with the school office.  Please reach out if you are unsure if yours is up to date and we can verify for you.  These need to be renewed every two years.  As always, feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns or if you would like to be added to the email list for ongoing volunteer opportunities at volunteers@sauvieislandschool.org.
