Kindergarten Updates with Mrs. V

Kindergarten has been having fun blending letters to read words in Phonics. We have also been learning how to print uppercase letters. In Language Arts, we just started a new book, The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We will learn about problems and solutions in this story. The students noticed and wondered about the book while sitting with a partner. Several times in January, we invite parents and family members into the classroom to play board games with the kids. It's always a fun time for the grownups and the students! We've been drawing in our nature journals, and last week, we sat in the sunshine and drew the dew on the grassy field. Kindergarten is looking forward to starting our place-based lessons about the plants, animals, and native foods of Sauvie Island soon!

3rd Grade Updates with Mrs. Schacht

We are kicking off an exciting new science unit as students begin studying the solar system. Our salmon fry release with the 8th graders was a huge success and a memorable hands-on learning experience. We’re also gearing up for OBOB and can’t wait to dive into some great books and friendly competition!

Middle School Updates with Ms. Ferris

We’re hard at work with our study of the hero’s journey in 6th grade Language Arts. We finished reading Ramayana: Divine Loophole by Sanjay Patel and are now reading a translation of The Odyssey by Gillian Cross. It’s been cool to see students apply their background knowledge of Greek mythology to the story, and we are mapping out the different phases of the hero’s journey to see if The Odyssey has all the same parts as Ramayana.

We started nature journaling last week, and this mild January weather has been great! We’ve already been out twice (see photos). I’m looking forward to seeing families at Math & Literacy Night on January 30! Come say hello—I’ll be working the Book Swap in the cafeteria. (And don’t forget to donate your gently used books and clothes; you know, in order to make room on your shelves for all the new ones you’ll pick up next Friday.)
