2nd Grade Updates with Ms. O'Malley

Second Grade is hard at work completing their Storyline Farmer’s Market Unit. Students have been working in groups to solve problems happening at the market. Students brainstormed how to help a coworker who was struggling to get to work on time and how to help them be kind to customers. The class worked together to solve problems revolving around potential weather situations at the market. Before finishing the unit at winter break, students will work to make the farmers market parking lot ADA-compliant. We will get to share our stands, characters, and frieze with our 7th-grade buddies and also Kindergarten and First Grade before winter break. The class has been enjoying this unit, and it has been so fun to see their imaginations come to life every day. In math, Second Grade is working on double-digit addition using the Open Number Line strategy. Students are working on reading and spelling multisyllabic words during phonics. Second graders have been writing informative paragraphs about how the changes in fall weather impact plants and animals.

4th Grade Updates with Mrs. Roberts

This fall, 4th graders participated in a range of learning activities. In November, students prepared stew to serve at the Harvest Festival. We also began our National Park Storyline. Each student selected an animal found in the park they created to research and then prepared a ranger talk to share what they learned about their animal’s adaptations. To wrap up our storyline, students will receive their free national park pass through the Every Kid Outdoors Program. We were also visited by OMSI, who taught us about birds of prey and guided students in dissecting owl pellets, and by George Fox presenters, who brought heart models and stethoscopes to support our Great Heart literacy module.

Middle School Updates with Ms. Ferris & Mrs. A

8th grade literacy

As we wrap up Trimester 1, 8th graders are also wrapping up their Holocaust unit. Last week we took a field trip to the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education (located downtown) as well as the Oregon Holocaust Memorial (located in Washington Park). The 8th graders were mature, respectful, and engaged on this field trip, and I received a lot of compliments about them! This week, students are presenting what they learned on their independent Holocaust research projects. I have really enjoyed teaching this 8th grade class, though I am looking forward to seeing the 6th graders for Language Arts Block starting next week!

6th grade math

We are just finishing up our 3rd unit on rates and percentages! Before each unit test we practice example test questions by doing speed partner review (picture included). Students sit in a line across from a partner. They each get one minute to try to answer the question on their own before having another minute to discuss it with their partner. After each round students move down the line to work with a new partner!

7th grade Language Arts

We just finished our final memoir projects! Students could choose from making it a poetic memoir or a graphic memoir (based on the 2 novel types we studied this trimester). Everyone also got to be part of a book club with a small group using a graphic memoir of their choosing. Although hesitant at first, students really enjoyed discussing their books in this format.

Hello Volunteer Community,

We would like to thank every volunteer for all the volunteering done this past month. There was so much going on and it was all a huge success because of you!

Current needs:

- There is an eighth grader in need of a mentor for their project. They are interested in working with toddlers/preschool age children. If you know of anyone that might be able to mentor this student, please reach out to us or Mrs. Horn at Ahorn@sauvieislandschool.org.

- The middle school is in need of extra yarn, crocheting needles, and cotton for their crocheting elective. This elective starts the second week of December. If you have any of these supplies laying around that could go to use at the school, please consider donating. This class can also use someone whose knowledgeable in crocheting that may be interested in helping out. The class times are from 11:20 AM – 12:10 PM every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Please check your emails for all the sign ups that are happening. If you are having a hard time, please reach out to us at volunteers@sauvieislandschool.org and we can help out with that.

Best,

Kelli Magnia and Mashell Pastorino

A reminder that all volunteers need to have an up to date background check on file with the school office.  Please reach out if you are unsure if yours is up to date and we can verify for you.  These need to be renewed every two years.  As always, feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns or if you would like to be added to the email list for ongoing volunteer opportunities at volunteers@sauvieislandschool.org.
