Dear Sauvie Island School Community,

Through our Place-Based approach, quality curriculum, and dedicated staff, our students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning. They have many opportunities to apply their skills through hands-on, real-world experiences that build critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. We strongly believe that through these methods, our students are able to achieve their potential in core academic areas.

This year, the board decided to test that conviction using state testing data. We compared our results to those of all other Oregon public schools (publicly available data here).  What we saw exceeded our expectations and is worth celebrating! Using the top tier metrics tracked by the Oregon Department of Education:

  • 3rd Grade Reading: last year's 3rd grade class reached 74% reading proficiency.  This placed SIS in the 96th percentile of participating Oregon schools (30 out of 700).  Even more impressive, every single student exceeded the "Level 1 - Does Not Meet" tier, an accomplishment shared by only 4 other schools statewide.
  • 8th Grade Math: our 8th graders reached 70% proficiency, placing SIS in the 94th percentile of all participating Oregon schools (20 out of 355).  Nearly half of our students scored the highest "Level 4" proficiency (exceeding grade level), an accomplishment exceeded by only 10 schools statewide.

We would like to congratulate our talented and dedicated staff, who work to meet the growth of each student at our school and regularly look for ways to improve. We'd also like to congratulate our hard working students, and look forward to continued success.

With gratitude,
SIS Board of Directors

P.S. (See you at Math and Literacy night on the 30th!)
